MITCH SCHAPIRA FOR STATE SENATE
When
Mitch first came to Alaska 26 years ago,
the Alaskan spirit was a can-do spirit. There was a sense that we could
make a new way, a better way, and leave a better place for our children and
grandchildren. Back then, when we said, “We don’t give a damn how they do it
Outside,” we meant that Alaskans working together could achieve things that must
have seemed like wild-eyed dreams to the folks down in the Lower
48.
It is time to send legislators to Juneau
who will work together to restore that promise and create new opportunities for
our state, so that our children can live and prosper here, as we
have.
Here’s
what Mitch says:
When I hear people say we have a “budget crisis,” I say to myself, “No, we don’t. We have a legislative crisis!” I want to help solve the legislative crisis that resulted in last session ending with no real progress towards solving State’s fiscal gap. Frankly speaking, we need a change.
Why?
That’s
simple. Our generation inherited the bountiful gifts our State served up.
Natural resource wealth enabled us to dream dreams never dreamt before. Natural
beauty inspired us with a sense of wonder. We owe it to our children to bequeath
to them an Alaska that holds forth an even greater promise. And we can do
it!”
What
are Mitch’s priorities:
My
biggest priority is education. When I say
“education,” I don’t mean testing at the end of the process to find out you have
a problem. I mean working at every school level to prevent the problem from
happening. That’s how we can prepare students to be good citizens, able to enjoy
all that life has to offer. In other words, I can’t agree with someone who says:
“Not everyone needs a high school education.”
Okay,
Mitch. How are you going to accomplish that?
For
years the oil companies have been telling us that they need stability and
predictability. They are right! We can’t go lurching from one budget crisis to
the next. We need legislators who will work together with the good folks from
both parties who are willing to roll up their sleeves and do hard work, and if
necessary, make the hard
decisions.
What
can you do?
· If you
agree that there has been an abdication of responsibility, and that we can’t
afford to send legislators to Juneau who draw lines in the sand, and then can’t
cross them to work with one another –
· If you
agree that Government works best when our representatives are not so arrogant
that they can’t compromise –
· If you
agree that a commitment to education means more than mouthing platitudes and quick-fix
solutions like “testing” that only compound the problem and divert our
attention from the real work that needs to be done–
· If you
agree that we can do better and that it is time for a change
